What is a Headshot? / "Every professional needs a professional headshot."
Headshots are photos taken at a maximum from the chest up. Unlike portraits that can be full length or from above the knees or waist.
They can be taken indoor or outdoor and can have just about any background. If there is a background it should be out of focus to draw attention to the subject.
If you work face to face with your clients, then a professional headshot will put you more firmly in their mind. If you are auditioning with agencies, a professional headshot will make you stand out from the crowd.
A Business Headshot is used commonly for marketing material, websites and social media sites like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook.
Here we are conveying a professional look with a clean white background providing good contrast in the image.
The wardrobe in the image should be consistent with what clients will see when they are face to face.
Skin smoothing, blemish removal, and sharpening have been applied but only to a minor degree. The final image should still look like the client.
Realtors, Doctors, Attorneys, Insurance Agents, Writers, Journalists and even Photographers can benefit from a professional headshot.
Choosing a landscape orientation allows for us to really crop in on the subject. Also allows for more negative space drawing the viewers attention to the subject’s eyes.
A white background helps keep the attention on the subject and is less distracting than other backgrounds.
A headshot should make the subject look confident and approachable.
Again, skin smoothing, blemish removal, and sharpening have been applied but only to a minor degree. The final image should still look like the client.
Social media sites like LinkedIn, Twitter and Facebook use a smaller cropped image under 200 x 200 pixels so make sure to crop in on the face a fair amount. This is not the time to use a full length or waist up image.
Knowing the uses for your image can determine everything from crop sizes to background styles.
